21 Apr Spiralizer – your way to a happier diet

You’ve probably heard of spiralizers – one of the latest foodie trends to sweep the nation. For those of you who haven’t, the idea is simple – using a handheld machine (or by buying pre-spiralized vegetables at the supermarket) you can turn vegetables into varying thickness noodles, and effectively replace the carbs in your meal with something just as delicious, and much healthier.

We’ll admit, we were dubious at first – the idea of replacing something as tasty as pasta with vegetables doesn’t sound like it’s going to be the most delicious thing in the world. But pair the vegetable spirals with protein, seasoning or sauce – whether you enjoy them cooked or raw – and you’ll barely be able to tell the difference.

As you can imagine, replacing some of your starchy carbohydrates with nutritious veg has some great health benefits. Remember not to cut them out completely – we need a bit of everything in moderation! However, gently lowering your carb intake can help with weight loss, reduce lethargy, decrease your risk of a variety of diseases, and improve cardiovascular function. You’ll still be getting a healthy dose of carbs from veg, which contains the all-important fibre and provides a slow release of energy throughout the day; as well as a huge amount of vitamins and minerals.

We’ve been scanning the internet far and wide to find the best spiralizer recipes, so that you don’t have to – try one below to eat your way to a healthier diet, which can have unlimited benefits on your physical and mental health and wellbeing. And remember – you can spiralize almost any vegetable, so feel free to substitute the veg in any of them!

Courgette Pad Thai Stiryfry
One of our favourite spiralizer recipes, this turns a classic stirfry into a delicious veggie treat. Using courgette in replacement of rice noodles, paired with prawns and pad thai sauce, we challenge you to notice the difference. If you’re not a fish eater the prawns can easily be replaced with chicken, tofu, or beef.

Butternut Squash Noodles with Sausage, Mushroom and Kale
Although this recipe is a little more indulgent, it tastes amazing and has the added benefit of super-nutritious kale. It uses beautifully colourful and delicious butternut squash and is really easy and quick to make – simply toss everything together, roast in the oven for a few minutes, and enjoy an Italian inspired cuisine. We recommend adding sage for an extra flavour boost.

Light Carrot Salad with Ginger and Peanut Dressing
If you’re after something light, this carrot based spiralized salad recipe is a wonderful choice for an evening meal, as a side to some fish or chicken, or a light Summer lunch. The ginger, lime and peanut sauce adds a delicate Asian flavour while the raw carrots provide the perfect crunch.

Coconut Curry with Sweet Potato Noodles
We can’t get enough of the sweet potato right now. Tasty, filling, and packed with nutrients, it’s the perfect accessory to any meal. This recipe transforms a classic recipe into a fragrant curry masterpiece. This is a veggie recipe but you can always add chicken or fish if you want something even more filling.

Baked Shoestring Fries with Garlic and Thyme
Let’s not forget, you can still get your potato carb fix with a spiralizer! Bake some crispy shoestring fries by thinly spiralizing some potatoes, and season with garlic, thyme and parmesan. The result is mouth-watering!
